Context
Context

A large commercial bank wanted to introduce instant payments for enterprise and mid-corporate customers in a pilot market. Unlike consumer banking, corporate transactions often involve high payment amounts, multiple approval levels, and regulatory verification processes.

The challenge was to enable near real-time payments while preserving the security, compliance, and operational controls required in enterprise banking.

Challenge
Challenge

Enterprise customers relied on traditional bank transfers that could take several days to process. This created operational inefficiencies, delayed financial decisions, and increased pressure on treasury and finance teams responsible for managing cash flow.

At the same time, introducing instant payments in a corporate banking environment required balancing:

  • speed and convenience,

  • regulatory requirements,

  • fraud prevention,

  • approval workflows for high-value transactions.

The challenge was not only enabling faster payments but doing so without compromising security and control.

Primary research & insights
Primary research & insights

The project started with stakeholder workshops involving business, compliance, and technical teams to understand operational and regulatory constraints.

Because direct customer research was unavailable, I analyzed:

  • support tickets,

  • customer complaints,

  • feedback collected by account managers,

  • existing payment behaviour across enterprise customers.

I also leveraged existing personas from previous research.

Primary Persona: Operator

Responsible for day-to-day payment execution and operational excellence.

Key goals:

  • execute payments quickly,

  • avoid processing errors,

  • maintain compliance with internal company procedures,

  • ensure successful transaction completion.

Design approach
Design approach

One of the most complex parts of the project was designing for multiple payment verification scenarios.

Enterprise customers operate with large transaction amounts, requiring:

  • different approval levels,

  • additional authorization steps,

  • random bank verification checks.

To reduce complexity, I mapped and documented separate end-to-end flows for each verification path.

This helped:

  • identify edge cases,

  • align stakeholders,

  • validate technical feasibility,

  • ensure consistent user experience across scenarios.

Results
Results

The project successfully progressed into development and was selected for pilot release in a single market.

The solution established the foundation for introducing instant payments into enterprise banking while maintaining the compliance and approval mechanisms required for high-value transactions.
